Mark 3: 31-35

. . . Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.

Family is defined in different ways, but in its deepest sense, I think family means belonging. We send our DNA away in an effort to know with whom we belong. We join clubs or organizations to be with people like us, and we can keep the “nonbelongers” out with walls and fences and closed doors.

Whom does Christ call our family? Who belongs and who does not? We are all born in the mind of God, and we are all called to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Christ calls our family anyone who does the “will of God.”

And just what is the “will of God?” I believe the will of God is love. Love God and love your neighbor. During Advent, let our first response be love.
